Outdoor Workout Ideas For Summers In Edmonton

Last updated June 6, 2022 by Michael Fouts

We don’t get much summer in Canada, especially in Edmonton, as such when it is nice outside I pretty much drop everything and get outside. I do the same with my clients, so I thought I’d share some of the places we go for workouts and what we do.

1. Greenspace Workouts

There are a variety of places that I use for outdoor workouts, but these can be done pretty much anywhere – backyard, local park, etc.

If you want a bodyweight workout, try this one:

Warm up: 25 jumping jacks, 10 Inchworms

Workout:

x4 sets total

Cool down: stretch

If you have a TRX, or another form of suspension trainer you can use a soccer net, or a sturdy tree, to add more variety of possible exercises and to make the workouts more challenging.

If you have a workout bench and a set of dumbbells, click here to download a full workout program for workouts you could use; you can also use that link to download a full bodyweight only program.

2. Stairs

There are quite a few sets of stairs in Edmonton, mostly localized around the river valley. You can do the stairs just by themselves, with different ways to mix it up, or you can add exercises to do along the way – at the top, bottom, etc.

Here are some of the stairs I like in Edmonton (see google map below for specific location):

  • Rowland Road, difficulty = 3/5
  • Royal Glenora, difficulty = 3.5/5
  • Fox Drive, difficulty = 4/5
  • Hotel Mac / Funicular series, difficulty = 4/5 (park at Rossdale Brewery and walk over)
  • Wolf Willow, difficulty = 4.5/5

Here is a workout you can try:

Warm up: up and down stairs 2x, walking

Workout:

  • Up, 15 sit ups at the top
  • Down, 10 push ups at the bottom

x8 sets total

Cool down: stretch

3. Hill Run Repeats

Just like the stairs you can get as creative as you want with these, but the premise of these is you find a hill and run up and back down it for a set amount of times. Here are a few of my favorites, which are also marked on the google map above:

  • Riverside Golf Course Hill, difficulty = 3/5
  • 1.0 km Emily Murphy Hill loop, difficulty = 4/5
  • Walterdale Hill, difficulty = 4.5/5

There are a lot of other options that you can use, like outdoor tracks (Strathcona Athletic Park, Rollie Mills Athletic Grounds) or just playing sports outside. I just thought I’d share a few I do with some clients, and use myself, to give you some ideas. I’d be happy to hear about your go-to spots – send me a message..

Cheers,

-Mike
